Rabbit Trail: Point of View

Estimated Time: 5 minutes

In A Boy Called Christmas, the author, Matt Haig, starts the book by speaking directly to you, the reader, using second person point of view. This makes you feel like you're part of the story right from the beginning!

There are three main points of view: first person, second person, and third person.

  • First person is when the story is told by a character using "I" or "we." It's like the character is talking directly to us.
  • Second person is when the story talks directly to the reader using "you." It's like the author is giving you, the reader, special instructions or making you part of the story.
  • Third person is when the story is told by someone outside the story using "he," "she," or "they." It's like there's an invisible storyteller telling us what everyone is doing.

Watch a short video explaining these points of view.

How did it make you feel when the author talked directly to you at the beginning of our story.
