Reading, Vocabulary and Grammar for this Lesson

Before we get started, reading a comic is a little different than reading other books. If you aren't familiar with reading graphic novels, then watch the video below to get some quick tips.

Read:

  • Chapter 1 (Start reading. You will finish Chapter 1 in Part 2).

Write:

  • As you are reading, write down in your journal any sentences or paragraphs that you like or have special meaning for you.
  • Pay attention to any words or phrases that you don't understand and write them in your journal. Look up the meanings of these words.

Vocabulary:

While you are reading, look for the following words. Write them in your notebook and use a dictionary to find the definitions.

  • pillar
  • moral
  • ingrates
  • patsy
  • meddle
  • carcass
  • comrade
  • reasonable

Spelling and Grammar:

You may choose a passage from the reading that you think is important and use it as your copywork, or you can use the selection below.

"Whatever you do -- don't stick out your tongue! Pitt! Poo! Yuck!"

  • Write it in your journal neatly.
  • Be careful to punctuate and capitalize the way the author did, and watch for spelling. If you make any errors, correct them.
  • Study this passage this week until you are asked to dictate it to your teacher.
  • This month, our grammar will be about using dialogue. We'll start with learning about onomatopoeia. Watch the video below about onomatopoeia, and then find the onomatopoeia in the passage you just copied.
