The island in our book is called The Island of the Blue Dolphins by Karana and her people. Today, we call it San Nicolas Island.

San Nicolas Island is a part of the Channel Islands of California. You can see it on the map below.

Archeologists believe that the island has been inhabited for thousands of years, probably by people of the Tongva.
