Magic Dust: Santa’s Magic Bag
Today we're going to do a science experiment that will help us understand something called volume. Volume is how much space something takes up. We're going to learn how much space a coin takes up in a glass of water. But we're going to make it a little more fun by pretending it's Santa's bag.
For this project, you will need:
- Plastic cup
- Black or red felt
- Glue or tape
- Water
- Coins
- Wrap a piece of felt around a plastic cup to make Santa’s bag.
- Fill the cup to the very top with water. When the cup is sitting on the table, the water should line up with the brim of the cup.
- Santa wants to hand out coins to all the children this year, and he needs your help filling his bag.
- Predict (that means guess) how many coins will fit in the bag before it overflows with water.
- Slowly add one coin at a time until the water overflows.
Was your prediction correct? What did you learn about volume today?
