Read, Write, Learn
Estimated Time: 3 hours
Read:
- Chapters 1-3
Write:
- As you are reading, write down any sentences or paragraphs that you like or have special meaning to you in your journal. Choose at least one passage from each chapter.
- Pay attention to any words or phrases that you don't understand and write them in your journal. Look up the meanings of these words.
Learn:
- During this study you will be learning about the Plot Arc and each step in it. Start by looking at the following chart which shows a Plot Arc and defines each step.
- Add the definitions of exposition and conflict in your notebook.
- Create a character list in your notebook. As you are reading, write down each character's name and add information that helps to define the character.
- Throughout this book, color plays an important role. Start a list in your notebook of when color words are used. List the color, a brief example, and the page number so you can refer back when needed.
- Print out the Plot Arc form below. You will be using it all throughout your study of The Great Gatsby.
- This week you should complete the exposition section with the setting of the story. Don't try to put character information in this box - utilize your notebook and character list for that info.
- Also, as you are reading try to determine the conflict of the story.
