Hortensia is an important person in Esperanza's life. We learn that she was a Zapotec Indian from Oaxaca. The Zapotec Indians come from a beautiful part of Mexico called Oaxaca. They have a rich history and still live in that area today. They speak their own language and have special traditions, like weaving colorful clothes and making pottery.
