Show What You Know

Estimated Time: 1 hour

Spelling

Dictate one of the passages you copied in your journal from Read, Write, Learn.

  • Be careful to punctuate and capitalize correctly and watch for spelling. If you make any errors, correct them.

If you have never used dictation before:

  • Dictation just means the student writes the copywork from memory while the teacher reads it aloud. The student should be familiar enough with the passage to accurately spell, capitalize and punctuate the passage.

Literary Elements

From the reading this week you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • What types of conflict do you find in your reading?
  • What examples of foreshadowing did you find?

After you have answered these questions (turn them into your parent if required), you can read some examples below.

This is not a comprehensive list but is meant to guide you and provide examples of what you might find.

Conflicts

  • Man vs Man - Tai appears to have turned on Aadam, though they were originally friends.
  • Man vs Man - Aadam wants his wife to become a modern Indian woman while she wants to follow the old traditions.
  • Man vs Fate - Saleem's life is not his own but is entangled with India's history because of the hour of his birth.

Foreshadowing

Here are a few examples though you may have found others:

  • "..despite everything she tries, I cannot hit her spitoon."
  • "..the baby she was carrying did not turn out to be her son."
  • "He kept himself in the background of our lives, always, except twice...once when he left us; once when he returned to destroy the world by accident."
  • "....knees and nose, nose and knees....."
