Rabbit Trail: Olympic History

Estimated Time: 5 minutes

A long, long time ago, the first Olympic games were held in Olympia, Greece, in 776 BC. It was a huge sports day where athletes from all over came to compete, not just for fun, but to be the best in front of everyone. They didn't have soccer or basketball, but they did run races, jump high, and even wrestle! It was a way to celebrate how fast, strong, and skilled they were, and it was so important that everyone stopped fighting and came together in peace to watch and cheer.

Every four years, just like we have leap years, these games happened, and everyone looked forward to them. Today, we still have the Olympics, and athletes from all around the world come to play new sports and some old ones too. They show us how amazing it is to try your best and work hard, just like in our story!

Watch this video about the ancient games.

Can you name a sport that athletes might have done in the ancient Olympics that we still do today?
