Rabbit Trail: Kotinos
Estimated Time: 5 minutes
The kotinos is a wreath made out of olive branches. According to tradition, the wreath was made from "wild olive leaves from a sacred tree near the temple of Zeus at Olympia." The olive tree was very special to the Greeks; it symbolized peace and victory.
This wreath was the reward for winning the ancient Olympics. The reward was an honor and not money. The winners would feel so proud wearing their kotinos, showing everyone that they were the best of the best.
