Rabbit Trail: The Torch

Estimated Time: 10 minutes

Some people believe that the torch used in the ancient games was based on the myth of Prometheus. According to an ancient myth, Prometheus stole fire from the gods and gave it to humans! This fire meant light, warmth, and the ability to cook food. It was a game-changer for everyone. But, stealing from the gods is a big no-no, and Prometheus got into a lot of trouble for it.

Learn about him in the video below.

Fast forward to today, and the Olympic torch carries the spirit of that fire. The ancient Greeks would light the torch in a secret ceremony at the Temple of Hera.

Now, actresses pretend to be priestesses and light the flame at the temple ruins. This flame then travels all around the world to the city hosting the Olympics, bringing a message of peace, friendship, and unity. It's like the fire Prometheus gave us, spreading warmth and light everywhere!

These are highlights from the 2016 torch-lighting ceremony.

Would you like to go to Olympia and see the lighting of the torch?
